DIY Texture Canvas Art

I shared on my Instagram a mini tutorial to create a similar piece to McGee and Co.’s “Texture Study” which retails for over $900. If this is out of your budget and you’re up for an easy DIY version, you’re in the right place.

Supplies:

1 can of spackle (I used about half for a 36×36″ canvas)

1 large putty knife

1 gallery wrapped canvas (I picked up this one on sale at my local craft store)

1 can matte spray paint (make sure it is for use on fabrics like this one)

Using your spackle and putty knife, spread that puppy on the canvas making sure you leave lots of lumps and smears. Creating the abstract spackle texture was my favorite part. It was so fun to create something without “needing” it to look perfect.

Let that dry according to the directions on the can. I waited about 24 hours.

Spackle easily crumbles when rubbed against, so be careful when moving your canvas to an open area to paint. My spackle dried white and blended in well with the canvas, but because it can crumble, I used the spray paint as an extra layer of protection.

Spray paint evenly over the spackle and canvas being sure not to miss the sides of the canvas as well. I did two thin coats, allowing time to dry in between, and used one full can. I did notice that the spray paint did not adhere as well to the spackle as it did to the canvas. If you use a color other than white, you may need another can of spray paint to completely cover.

Also, I mentioned you should make sure that your spray paint can be used with fabrics because some are only made for metals, plastics, and other hard surfaces. These tend to dry very hard and would not be good for a stretchy, fabric canvas.

Once these are dry, you now have a very high end looking piece of artwork you can hang anywhere in your home! It would look great above a bed, in an entry way, or in your dining room (like ours). I’ll also be framing it out using Chris Loves Julia’s floating canvas frame tutorial to finish the look.
